For this apartment courtyard in North Bondi, our client requested a garden that was beautiful and inviting, offering privacy from the neighbours and a flow between indoor and outdoor living. A built-in barbeque with storage, a dining space and lounge area were also requested. We designed a simple but bold layout, selecting materials, plants and colours to reflect the style of the building and the coastal environment.
The kitchen and living room opened out onto this space, so it was important that the new garden offer an appealing view, with a relaxed but private feel. Vertical timber picket fencing was installed along the boundary and painted white to match the trim of the building. With the garden facing the street, this was important for both privacy and security reasons.
Our client requested a plant palette of coastal and subtropical varieties, focusing more on succulents and avoiding florals. Planters were installed along the perimeter with a lush array of textured, layered planting including Sansevieria trifasciata (Mother-in-Law’s Tongue), Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’ (Black Rose), Phoenix roebelenii (Pygmy Date Palm) and Cordyline glauca (Green Ti Plant). Garden lighting and irrigation were also included in the installation.
A tropical oasis in the heart of North Bondi, this intimate apartment courtyard now functions as a second living room, extending the floorplan of the apartment through the warmer months and providing a bright and cheery space for cooking, dining and relaxing.
